About The Emerald Nurse
Founding and growing a pediatric home health agency specializing in medically fragile kids taught Emerald Nurse creators Kat Sullivan, RN, and Tom Messina, MBA, some valuable lessons. At the top of the list was the importance of good training and educational materials for both the agency’s staff and the patients and families they served.
“These are the tools we wish we’d had then,” says Sullivan of the planned series of Emerald Nurse educational videos. “We didn’t have the bandwidth to make them while we were running the agency, but we do now, and we believe they can make life better for G-tube patients, their families, and their nurses and doctors.”
Their goals with the Emerald Nurse videos are the same as their goals managing their home health agency:
Eliminating unnecessary emergency room trips
Preventing hospitalizations and injuries
Reducing anxiety and building lasting knowledge about total G-tube care and G-tube DME and accessories
More Emerald Nurse Innovations
The Emerald Nurse video series is not the first innovative project for its creators. Sullivan and Messina have launched a number of other initiatives aimed at improving life for patients, families, and nurses.
Among those is A Day to Play, an event series that brings together medically fragile children and their families with caring volunteers, generous sponsors, and student nurses from area universities for fun-filled afternoons designed to add joy to the lives of these special kids.
